- Liberalisation and globalisation brought in their wake, investment, employment, prosperity and a new way of life. India Inc. soon got used to consistent high growth, managed and infact benefited from internal and external competition. We adapted to shorter product life cycles, embraced technology, and ventured outside our country's borders for more.
- One aspect that Indian corporates may not have managed as well, is the aspect of attrition or conversely retention.
- The attrition issue is a few years old and corporates have tried different methods to minimise it. But none of the organisations - large, medium and small, have had much success. The retention issue was earlier limited to IT and BPO space, but Retail, Insurance, Banking, Infrastructure, Biotech, and a few others have also caught the virus. Attrition is also not restricted to any one level.
- The attrition issue is attributed only to excessive demand for skills. How correct is this position? Can there be other causes? People with a ring-side view in corporates hint at causes over and above the demand. Is there a case to examine the alignment between recruitment and retention?
